About
After last year’s success, the Sperrins Walking Festival is back for 2024!
The event will be held mid-October – Sat 12th and Sun 13th October 2024 - across the Causeway Coast and Glens and the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The event will feature a range of moderate and challenging walks in this stunning landscape which includer dramatic clifftops, mountains, woodlands and farmland trails. Breathtaking views of the open countryside will be enjoyed along with interpretation of the local history, geology and environmental heritage.
Organised by The Sperrins Partnership (comprising the four Councils within the Sperrins) and outdoor experts Far and Wild, the programme aims to attract a diverse group of walkers. It promotes not only the enjoyment of this stunning landscape but also the benefits to physical, mental, and emotional health. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a destination rich in unique experiences, led by experienced guides who will share the stories, history, environment, and heritage of this remarkable area.
Sat 12 Oct:
‘The Eco in Altnaheglish’ is a Moderate looped walk starting at top of the Glen and completing an entire circuit via Altnaheglish. The walk looks at the evidence of the natural eco-system at work within a water catchment area which houses both conifer and broadleaf woodland. It asks how the ‘sense of place’ will change with function, or how an ecosystem is used, and how to restore the original function of an ecosystem to support life. Distance 10km
Sun 13 Oct:
‘The Gift of the Uplands’ is a Challenging looped walk on Mullaghneaney. It starts on the Glendora Road and takes a looped route on forest trail and over open hillside (off-trail). The walk looks at how upland areas support life in the valleys below, being rainfall catchments and the home of a variety of plant and animal species necessary for keeping nature in balance. This walk is for competent hikers with prior experience of walking upland routes. Distance 12km
So why not come and enjoy the stunning landscape of the Causeway Coast and Glens, including dramatic clifftop, mountain, woodland and farmland trails? Breathtaking views of the open countryside will be enjoyed along with interpretation of the local history, geology and environmental heritage.
