Traditional Spoon Making - Flowerfield Arts Centre

Flowerfield Arts Centre, 185 Coleraine Road, Portstewart, County Derry/Londonderry, BT55 7HU
Wooden spoons in the process of being carved.

About

As part of the Craft Trail Artists exhibition launch, John Wilkinson of Valkyrie Craft delivers a fascinating introduction to the universal and ancient art of utensil carving. He will take you through the basic tools and equipment and guide you through the process to carve your own spoon, as well as outlining the history of carving, wood types and techniques.

* please note the times of this workshop differ from the Flowerfield Arts Guide. It is a single 4 hour long workshop with a break for lunch

Participants will use two specialist carving knives and a lapboard for assisting with the carving process. There will be a range of basic 'blanks' to choose a spoon shape/style. Sharp edged tools will be used. Previous carving experience isn't required but a reasonable level of manual dexterity is essential.

A unique practical insight to an ancient tradition. The class is small, and places are limited.
