Fancy a little weekend treat? An Irish Coffee is an excellent little pick me up that will warm your hands and satisfy the strongest of sweet cravings. This classic cocktail of sweetened whiskey and coffee is a little piece of Ireland that you can enjoy without even having to set foot on the island!

Here’s our tips for getting it just perfect:

What you’ll need:

  • 50ml cold double or whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp soft brown sugar
  • 50ml Irish whiskey
  • 150ml-200ml freshly brewed coffee
  • Nutmeg

Start by heating your glass with boiling water and leave to stand. Whip the cream ensuring it does not become too thick. What you’re aiming for here is whipping the cream just until the bubbles disappear and ribbons form under the whiskey. At this stage it’s better for the cream to be too thin rather than too thick, you don’t want it sinking to the bottom! Put the cream back in the fridge.

Timing is key, so at this stage you’ll want to make your coffee (freshly brewed works best) to ensure it’s not too hot or too cold by the time it comes to serving. Remember that you’ll be adding cream to finish, so make sure your coffee hasn’t cooled too much over the next few steps.

In a small saucepan, dissolve your sugar in 2 tbsp of hot water, which should form the consistency of syrup almost immediately – make sure not to burn it! Remove the sugar mixture from the heat and stir in 50ml of Irish Whiskey (might we suggest getting your hands on a bottle of one distilled locally!)

Empty the hot water from your heat proof glass and pour in the sweetened whiskey mixture. Next, add your freshly prepared coffee and stir to mix with the whiskey. Finally, get your cream from the fridge and whisk again just once. Use a spoon to pour the cream over the back of in to the coffee – if done carefully, this should prevent the cream sinking to the bottom. You can then garnish with a light dusting of nutmeg.
