It’s officially summertime here in the Causeway Coast and Glens; school is out, the sun has started to make a reappearance, and for many – this is the month that we’ve been waiting on for several years as The Open takes place half way through the month at Royal Portrush Golf Club!

Besides The Open, there’s plenty more happening across the Borough. Here’s just a few of the many events you can enjoy this July:

Girona Gold Maritime Festival | 6-7 July

The story of the Girona Gold is an intriguing and fascinating one; La Girona, a ship of the Spanish Armada, was wrecked off the Causeway Coast in 1588, with great loss of life and valuable treasure. The treasure lay undiscovered until 52 years ago when a team of divers raised a huge hoard from the wreck. Organised by the Portballintrae Development Community, the Girona Gold Festival celebrates the history of La Girona and it’s treasure through a swimming relay race, interesting talks from historians, and interactive taster sessions with local water-based activity providers!

The 148th Open | 14-21 July

This is the one we’ve been waiting for! In 2015, it was announced that The 148th Open Championship would return to Northern Ireland for the first time since 1951. Northern Ireland will be at the centre of the global sporting spotlight this July as professional golfers compete for their chance to win the coveted Claret Jug. Championship Days sold out in record time but Practice Day tickets are still available to purchase. The atmosphere is going to be absolutely incredible – we can’t wait to welcome golf-fanatics from near and far to our beautiful Causeway Coast!

Live at The 148th Open | 15-21 July

To mark the historic return of The Open, the seaside town of Portrush will be transformed into a hub of entertainment, live music and markets to explore this July to coincide with the championship itself. Kerr Street Green, Antrim Gardens and Station Square will host top performers and golf inspired activities for a full week as thousands flock to the area for one of the biggest sporting events in the world!

Armoy Road Races | 20-27 July

The world famous road races take place once again in and around the picturesque County Antrim village of Armoy. The three mile circuit harks back to the 1970’s and the days of the legendary Armoy Armada. Race Week events include a truck run, photo exhibition and classic bike and car displays. A thrilling two day racing experience for all to enjoy, culminating in the grand finale – Race of Legends. Come along to see many of the top riders in the world battle it out to be the 2019 Race of Legends winner.

Red Sails Festival | 22-27 July

This community organised festival is jam-packed full of entertainment for all ages. Over the course of the week there will be live music featuring pop, rock, blues, country and traditional music. There will also be fun street theatre shows that include Mr Mess, Mr Whizzy, Miss Shell, the Singing Mermaid and Roary the Dinosaur. The festival closes with an epic fireworks finale on 27 July – don’t miss it!

Kite Festival | 29 July – 4 August

This high flying spectacle returns as a week long festival, offering fun for all the family as a kaleidoscope of kites of all shapes and sizes take to the skies over this stunning coastal estate of Downhill. Award winning kite displays, stunt kite performances and synchronised kite teams are just a few of the highlights of the festival. You can also enjoy a petting farm, a speciality food and drink market, helicopter rides and much more!
