About
Ballywillan Drama Group is delighted to present Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel at Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart, for three performances only from Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th September 2026.
Set in rural County Donegal during the golden, fading days of the summer of 1936, Brian Friel's much-loved masterpiece invites audiences into the world of the five Mundy sisters: Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose and Christina. Living together in a small home outside the village of Ballybeg, the sisters navigate family bonds, social expectation, faith, memory, work, love and longing at a time when the world around them is beginning to change.
At the heart of the play is the arrival of the family's first wireless radio, affectionately named "Marconi". Through bursts of music, dance and interruption, the radio releases something joyful, unruly and deeply human in the Mundy household. As the harvest festival of Lughnasa approaches, moments of humour, tenderness and celebration sit alongside unspoken dreams, private disappointments and the fragile knowledge that life will not remain the same forever.
Dancing at Lughnasa is one of Ireland's most cherished modern classics: a play full of warmth, humanity, heartbreak and the irresistible need to dance when words are no longer enough. Friel's writing captures the beauty of ordinary lives with extraordinary emotional depth, making this a moving evening of storytelling for audiences who love theatre, Irish drama, family stories and richly drawn characters.
This production marks an exciting new venue for Ballywillan Drama Group as they bring the world of the Mundy sisters to the beautiful Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart. With just three performances available, early booking is strongly recommended.
Performances take place nightly at 7:30pm from 24th to 26th September 2026.
