About
Causeway Coast & Glens (CCG) Branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society meets once a month (September - June) for talks designed to help folk with their family history, particularly those with ancestors in the CCG area. Some are on specific areas of research such as finding and using land records, censuses or DNA, and others are of a wider historical perspective eg farming or military ancestors, designed to explain how our ancestors lived. What their lives may have been like. Normally there is a workshop every season where folk can ask local experts about how to knock down brick walls and develop their research. Most evenings a speaker will give a talk for around 45 minutes and then take questions. Refreshments are provided afterwards. Membership is £25 a year or non members can pay for individual talks on the night at a cost of £3. Members unable to attend the talk in person can attend by Zoom plus most talks are recorded and available to view later for 2 weeks.
October 2025's talk is by Professor Keith Lilley and is entitled: "A journey through mediaeval landscapes: how the Anglo-Normans shaped our towns and townlands." Professor Lilley teaches at the School of Natural & Built Environment at Queens University, Belfast. He is an historical geographer with particular research expertise in interpreting historic landscapes, maps, and built environments.
His research focus on 'mapping medieval landscapes' is long-standing, using I digital and geospatial technologies, together with historical records and archaeology, to 'recover' medieval urban landscapes through mapping and visualisation.
Professor Lilley is a renowned expert in his field and is the author of several books and has contributed countless articles and chapters to other publications.
If you would like to hear what the Normans did for us, please come along and enjoy this talk.
The meeting is on Tuesday 28th October 2025, at the Sandel Centre in Coleraine at 8.00pm. (Ground floor meeting room).
