About
Causeway Coast & Glens (CCG) Branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society meets once a month (September - June) for talks designed to help folk with their family history, particularly those with ancestors in the CCG area. Some are on specific areas of research such as finding and using land records, censuses or DNA, and others are of a wider historical perspective eg farming or military ancestors, designed to explain how our ancestors lived. What their lives may have been like.
Normally there is a workshop every season where folk can ask local experts about how to knock down brick walls and develop their research. Most evenings a speaker will give a talk for around 45 minutes and then take questions. Refreshments are provided afterwards. Membership is £25 a year or non members can pay for individual talks on the night at a cost of £3. Members unable to attend the talk in person can attend by Zoom plus most talks are recorded and available to view later for 2 weeks.
March 26's talk is by Andrew Kane and is entitled: "Census substitutes" whose talk will explore using census substitutes in Irish genealogical research. Andrew is a member of the Causeway Coast & Glens family history society and is highly recognised for several authoritative genealogical reference books eg "The Town Book of Coleraine" (publ 2016) and the "Townland Atlas of Ulster" (publ 2024). Ireland has sadly lost most of its pre 1901 censuses for a variety of reasons. Some fragments have survived and Andrew will discuss those. But many other, sometimes surprising, sources are available as substitutes. Griffiths Valuation is perhaps the most famous but there are a many others. Andrew will discuss them and explain how you can get valuable genealogical information from them. Please come along and enjoy his talk.
The meeting will also be available by Zoom and the link is attached. It will be recorded and made available via Vimeo, soon afterwards, for the usual 3 weeks.
