About
Limavady Workhouse Museum – Ireland's Best Preserved Workhouse
Step into the lived experiences of those who passed through Limavady Workhouse, one of Ireland's most authentically preserved Poor Union buildings. From 1842 to 1932, this remarkable site witnessed the stories of thousands, stories which are brought to life through immersive guided tours and personal interpretation.
The Workhouse's knowledgeable guides share the social history of the workhouse era and Ireland during this transformative period, whilst the original dormitories and poignant Paupers' Graveyard offer tangible connections to those who lived and died here.
The site holds remarkable stories including that of the blind fiddler Jimmy McCurry, who passed away in the workhouse and played the melody that would later become the world-famous "Danny Boy".
During your visit, you'll also learn about the site's later chapter as Roe Valley Hospital (1932–1998), revealing how the building evolved to serve the community in different ways, including treating RAF personnel during wartime, with original Nissen Huts still standing on the grounds as evidence of this military connection.
Whether you're a local historian, a curious visitor, or exploring your family heritage, Limavady Workhouse offers reflection, learning, and genuine connection to our shared past.
