About

The Old Church Centre offers a busy programme of music, theatre, heritage events, exhibitions, wedding ceremonies and venue hire. We also provide visitor information on the rich cultural heritage of the building, Cushendun and the Glens.

Built in the 1840’s the Old Church served a small resident congregation and the gentry who holidayed in Cushendun until it was deconsecrated in 2003. Cushendun Building Preservation Trust (CBPT) began a campaign in 2006 to rescue the building from dereliction and their efforts were rewarded in 2019 when they officially opened the beautifully restored ‘Old Church Centre’.

The Old Church is a lovely example of ecclesiastic rural architecture. The interior is plain and unadorned. It is built in locally quarried red sandstone and hosts a distinctive bell tower crowned by tapering corner pinnacles. The interior is plain and unadorned with six clear glass lancet windows, the east, stained glass window bears the coat of arms of the O’Neill’s. The sympathetic restoration of the Church ensured that the original character of the building was maintained, and the new extension required to provide 21st Century conveniences was added in a manner that ensured the integrity of the original structure.

Cushendun Building Preservation Trust manage this unique grade 2 listed building on a not-for-profit basis. Since opening the centre has played host to theatre companies, contemporary, traditional, and classical musicians, hosted a variety of exhibitions and providing a welcoming space for an array of art and craft workshops, meetings, and classes.
